OVERVIEW

BlueHalo is seeking an entry level research scientist in the area of Adaptive Material and Structure Design to work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The successful candidate will be an active member of a collaborative origami engineering research team within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate and Aerospace Systems Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory.  The research project will focus on the development of computational tools for the design of origami devices and origami-inspired material microstructures for multiphysics performance objectives.  The successful candidate will develop efficient design strategies to predict optimal crease patterns for large folding operations with nonlinear geometric and material effects.  The candidate will also integrate additional performance criteria, such as electromagnetic or acoustical objectives, into the design tool.  Research opportunities may include investigating origami mechanics at the nanoscale, where interfacial physics, such as van der Waals and entropic interactions, become prominent.  The ability to develop design problems that address fundamental questions of material behavior and/or device reconfigurability is required.  The successful candidate will experimentally test and/or work closely with an experimental collaborator to validate model predictions.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are a prerequisite for employment.  The successful candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working independently, but also successfully collaborate with researchers from different technical backgrounds.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING

  • This position is working within a government facility and requires US Citizenship
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field of study
  • Experience with implementation and development of finite element (FE) models involving nonlinear material properties and finite deformations
  • Experience with technical computing: (e.g. Matlab, Python, and FE packages (COMSOL, Abaqus, or ANSYS))

Additional Technical Experience Preferred:

  • Design optimization experience
  • Fabrication experience
  • Multiphysics modeling experience
