OVERVIEW

BlueHalo has an opportunity available for an entry level Research Scientist to join our collaborative multidisciplinary team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.  AFRL consists of a multidisciplinary team of chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, and physicists working on new technologies for advanced defense applications.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Research Scientist will be an active member of the Photonic, Electronic and Soft Materials Division working on pertinent research goals within the Polymers and Specialty Materials Branch.  Primary responsibilities will be to leverage synthetic chemistry, and bio-based compounds, to synthesize organic compounds using lab scale flow chemistry and conventional batch protocols.  This position will be focused on using automated approaches and flow chemistry to perform reactions and interpret results using traditional spectroscopic techniques (GC-MS, UV/Vis, NMR, CD, chiral HPLC, CV).  Emphasis in areas may include, but are not limited to, chiral compounds, cyclic hydrocarbons/heterocycles, amines and other heteroatom based organic and bio-based compounds.  A background in research scale flow chemistry, organic synthesis, and polymers is preferred.  Experience with electrochemical reactions, surface bound catalysts, enantioselective reactions, in-line analytics and small molecule purification is desirable.  Familiarity with Python programming and data science is preferred.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Performing synthetic reactions using flow and batch chemistry techniques
  • Optimization and purification of reactions along with building a basic understanding of chemistry principles dictating reactivity
  • Characterization of redox states using cyclic voltammetry
  • Incorporation of automation, in-line analytics and machine learning into synthetic workflows

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING

  • This position will involve working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field of study required
  • Python programming (entry level+)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn and develop new approaches and techniques
