BlueHalo has a full-time Research Scientist position available to support the Optoelectronic Device and Materials Research Group within the Material and Manufacturing Directorate (RXEE) of the Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) as part of the Biological, Electronic, and Nanoscale Department of the BlueHalo Air Force Business Unit.
This position will require working with government customers at AFRL to design, develop and fabricate photonic sensor components and subsystems that would be incorporated into next generation quantum sensors. The Ideal candidate will have a strong background and experience in integrated photonic modeling, fabrication, and testing. The successful candidate will focus on solid-state ensemble quantum sensing in diamond that is addressed and read out via integrated photonics.
Master’s degree in Optics, Physics, Electro Optics, or related Engineering fields with 2 years of experience working in a laboratory / manufacturing industry. Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, or Electro Optics is preferred.
Experience and knowledge in hybrid and heterogenous materials integration for integrated photonics.
Simulation, modelling and optimization of photonic design and prototyping through feedback from optical testing (e.g. FDTD modelling tools; COMSOL, Lumerical)
1-3 years of experience in conducting laboratory research and interacting with technical research teams; experience in a government/DoD laboratory environment a plus.
A background in relevant fields (e.g. optics, solid-state physics, statistics, materials processing), strong fabrication and testing experience.
A desire to develop advanced techniques and processes for hybridization/heterogenous integration of integrated photonic devices.
Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills, and good written and verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with productivity software suites (Microsoft Office, Google Suite) used for email, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, cloud file sharing, and virtual meetings.
Strong ability to clearly communicate results, prepare technical reports, adapt to challenges, work independently, and effectively time manage responsibilities.
Willingness to collaborate and work with other scientists and engineers.
Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain a secret clearance.
