OVERVIEW

UES, a BlueHalo Company, has an opportunity available for a technical business professional to join the UES team as an Assistant Director to lead our biomanufacturing materials initiative. The successful candidate will oversee the development and operation of a pilot manufacturing facility, scale up and proto-typing of bio-molecules and be responsible for all business aspects for bio manufactured products.  Initially this individual will work with a small team and begin building the team as required.  Their direct responsibilities will include identifying applications and overseeing proto-types, creating strategic business plans for each biomolecules including manufacturing scale-up, identifying partners to complete the research, proto-typing and transition phase of development and possibly creating partnerships to license and/or develop channels to transition these emerging products. This position will also be responsible for identifying new biomolecules for development, acting as a liaison for biomolecules under development as well as identifying new sources of revenue including identifying government funding.

 

This position will require an understanding of every aspect of biomanufacturing as well as the understanding of technology transition and/or commercialization. This individual will have the ability to communicate technical topics to people with and without technical backgrounds and have a network or have the potential to develop a network to further biomolecule transitions/commercialization. This individual must possess business knowledge to investigate the potential of novel technology for profitability. The role will also include leveraging and growing commercial networks and identifying and fostering mutually productive collaborations with academic, government, industrial, and manufacturing partners. UES has been in the synthetic biology discipline for 10 years and has the technical knowledge and skills. This position will harness these skills and help build a thriving program. This position may evolve into a larger leadership role and a division.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Oversee biomanufacturing pilot plant including working with the technical lead and consultants to develop plans, costing and facility requirements necessary to be successful
  • Develop emerging products strategy and find product gaps through identification of market-pull opportunities for short and long-term revenue generation
  • Work directly with AFRL/UES technical team to assess commercial market potential of bio manufactured technologies
  • Work with Technology Manager and proto-typing team to understand and develop prototypes and testing protocols for a variety of applications
  • Ensure intellectual property is protected through taking appropriate steps (information security, patent office filing, coaching team members) to retain control
  • Build strategic partnerships with companies to develop commercial R&D and product development
  • Assist with the identifying the talent required to run and operate the pilot facility and biomanufacturing initiative overall
  • Identify government funding to support the product strategy
  • Be the internal and external face of the Biomanufacturing Materials Initiative
  • Routine information gathering and coordination with members of the UES, a BlueHalo Company, emerging products team to generate the necessary marketing, and proposal support while maintaining communication with technical divisions
  • Craft proposal strategy and work with the AFRL/UES technical team to execute this strategy

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING

  • This position involves working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Masters or PhD in the areas of synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, or related field in process development is preferred. Individuals with a successful track record in technology/product business development will be considered in lieu of the education requirements.
  • 10 years of work experience with a combination of manufacturing/selling innovative technological products in a government to business environment and business to business environment
  • Demonstrated understanding the complexity of biomanufacturing and biomanufacturing scale-up
  • Knowledgeable in manufacturing operations including safety/compliance
  • Demonstrated experience in developing professional networks, identifying government funding, and growing business to business relationships with potential end-users
  • Understanding of the patent process and intellectual property (IP) management
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work closely with technical staff, and a background of working within a collaborative team environment
  • Willingness to travel
  • The willingness to take on various roles as we build out the team
  • Ability to develop and give professional presentations
  • Ability to guide and develop new business strategies
  • Track record of growing government technical programs
