OVERVIEW

UES, a BlueHalo Company, has an opportunity available for a Research Scientist to join our collaborative multidisciplinary team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The research will involve developing physics-based methods for simulating the behavior of composite materials across multiple length scales. The candidate will contribute to the development of new solution methods that enable the simulation of discrete damage across length scales for complex composite components by:

  • Developing homogenization methods and surrogate models that consider the multiscale nature of composites and develop complementary models for the errors introduced that especially focus on the spectral properties of the error
  • Prototype and implement the proposed methods in C++ and/or Python
  • Engage in cross-discipline collaboration

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Strong communication skills and problem-solving skills are highly desirable. We are particularly interested in a highly motivated, adaptable, and capable individual with a Ph.D. or Masters in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING

  • This position is working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Ph.D. (or to be completed in next 6 mos.) or a Masters combined with significant experience in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field
  • Experience in at least one of the following domains:
    • Homogenization theory or surrogate modeling
    • Iterative solution methods, especially multigrid methods
    • Extended finite element methods or spectral element methods
  • Expertise in developing computational tools, especially finite element methods for solid mechanics, is preferred
  • Ability to learn the state-of-the-art through literature review and develop new approaches
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • This position will require a self-motivated individual with good interpersonal skills and careful attention to details
  • Adaptable to varying program objectives
