OVERVIEW

UES, Inc. is expanding its team pushing the boundaries of Digital Manufacturing Research in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory. We are seeking a research scientist with skills and experience in manufacturing-informed design.

 

Our team is working collaboratively with the Department of the Air Force researchers advancing and applying recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to develop and validate the tools to make complex manufacturing informed design decisions more approachable and computationally affordable to accelerate development and deployment of next generation manufacturing capabilities in future Air Force programs.

 

Advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing (one of many potential application areas) have dramatically expanded the design space for aerospace components, both in terms of geometry and material properties, however, these new techniques also bring new uncertainties, and many limitations persist. Navigating this complex environment to provide designs which are both high-performing as well as manufacturable requires AI/ML tools to integrate the materials and manufacturing considerations during the design phase, such that ‘design’ now includes specifications for its production to achieve the desired level of performance.

 

The ideal candidate will be responsible for proposing, developing, and characterizing novel process-informed AI/ML enabled design routines leveraging approaches such as topology optimization and generative design.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Propose and investigate and apply AI/ML tools to produce novel process-informed design techniques relevant to common Air Force development activities.
  • Provide regular communication and feedback to the team regarding progress, setbacks, lessons learned, and new research opportunities.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment by engaging in creative discussions with members working in related areas.
  • Engage with the academic community by writing papers, giving seminars, and leading workshops.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING

  • This position is working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related field.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing optimization and ML techniques such as surrogate modeling, neural networks and dimensionality reduction.
  • Self-starter, ability to work both independently and cooperatively in diverse teams, and flexibility for varying program objectives.
  • Experience with common programming languages/packages such as Python, Matlab, TensorFlow/Pytorch, etc.
  • Experience with high performance, cloud, and/or GPU computing.
